Tuburan to host firefighting course
THE Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) chose the Municipality of Tuburan, Cebu as the site for the National Fire Training Institute (NFTI) where all future firefighters will be trained and existing fire personnel will enhance their skills.
BFP 7 Director Ismael Codilla said that putting the institute in Tuburan will benefit Cebuanos and the rest of Region 7 more than having it in Kabangkalan, Negros Occidental.
Codilla said they are rushing the preparation of the documents especially that Kabangkalan, through its congressman and governor, is also interested to host and has offered three hectares for the project.
The National Fire Training Institute will be managed by the National Public Safety College.
Tuburan Mayor Democrito “Aljun” Diamante said the family of Diosdado Horlano of Barangay San Juan, Tuburan has donated two hectares of land for the site of the fire institute.
The mayor believes that with the institute, Tuburan’s economy will further grow.
Diamante has the backing of Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Chief Mel Sarmiento in proposing that the institute will be established in Tuburan.
Diamante and Sarmiento were once colleagues in the Mayors’ League of the Philippines.
Diamante said that compared to Kabangkalan, Tuburan is just one flight from the different provinces. It will take two flights to reach Kabangkalan.
He said he requested Codilla for a courtesy call by the Horlano family on June 14 to show their sincerity in donating the land for the future institute.
Codilla said the BFP has 21,000 fire personnel in the country, 569 of which are assigned in Cebu Province and about 200 are in Cebu City.
Codilla said that because there will be only one training institute in Southern Philippines, it will also accept applicants and new recruits from Mindanao.
The BFP director said the bureau will hire more personnel every year because of the increasing demand through to expansion of urban areas.
